About Fertility Testing for Men

We offer fertility testing for men using the most advanced, state-of-the-art technology available, providing an accurate diagnosis for treatment of male reproductive disorders.

A certified High Complexity Laboratory director leads the andrology team, and a licensed medical technologist performs all testing and procedures. The Andrology Laboratory is licensed as a clinical laboratory facility by the state of Florida.

For our patient’s comfort, a private specimen collection area is available at The IVF CenterSM.

Evaluation

The following tests and services for men are available at The IVF CenterSM. Click the title of each test or service to discover more:

Sperm MAR (Mixed Agglutination Reaction) determines the presence or absence of antibodies in the sperm sample itself.
Fructose screening evaluates the level of sugars in the semen of the male partner. This test is most often used for men with suspected retrograde ejaculation. Retrograde ejaculation refers to the entry of semen into the bladder instead of going out through the urethra during ejaculation.
A preliminary test of the sperm sample determines how a patient’s sperm will react to normal processing for assisted reproductive procedures.
Sperm must be washed before it is placed into the uterus. Sperm washing for intrauterine insemination is routinely performed at The IVF CenterSM. A sperm sample may be used from either the male partner or from a commercial sperm bank. (Both type of sample are processed in our laboratory).
Semen analysis refers to looking at semen under a microscope to identify any signs of abnormality. Your doctor is especially interested in determining sperm count, motility (speed) and shape. This analysis is an essential part of any fertility work-up since problems with male sperm account for 40% of all infertility experienced by couples.

The semen analysis is performed in the doctor’s office. You must refrain from ejaculation for 48-96 hours prior to giving a specimen for evaluation. Your sample is usually collected by masturbating and ejaculating into a sterile specimen cup. The container is provided at the time the appointment is made. Your specimen may also be collected at home and brought to the office within one hour of collection.

Analysis of your sperm includes the following:

  • Volume (amount of semen)
  • pH
  • Sperm Count and Motility (speed)
  • Strict Kruger Morphology (shape)
  • Viability Staining*
  • Antibody testing*

*Performed based on diagnosis

While The IVF CenterSM does not operate a commercial sperm bank, routine freezing of sperm samples may be performed for our patients for scheduling reasons during a treatment cycle or to attempt paternity at a later time. Pre-vasectomy patients, or some oncology patients may elect to cryopreserve (freeze) their sperm for later use.
Dr. Trolice and the staff are amazing and the level of care is outstanding, they really take their time to get to know you and follow every step of the process. They help me complete my amazing family. I recommend them to everyone!”

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What causes infertility in men?

A wide number of factors could be involved in male infertility such as hormone disorders, injury to the reproductive anatomy, obstruction, illness or male sexual dysfunction. Depending on the factors involved, sperm can be permanently or temporarily impacted and prevent conception.

  • What is erectile dysfunction / impotence?

Erectile dysfunction, also known as impotence, is an inability to achieve intercourse resulting from erection issues. Erectile dysfunction has different levels of severity that can vary from complete lack of erection, to a partial erection that is not enough to penetrate your partner or is lost soon after you penetrate. Erectile dysfunction is typically more common among olr men, but it can occur at any age.

  • What is premature ejaculation?

Premature ejaculation occurs when a man has an orgasm too soon during intercourse to satisfy his partner. Premature ejaculation is more common during the beginning of a relationship but can be caused by anxiety or overstimulation.

  • Is erectile dysfunction / impotence a cause or symptom of male infertility?

Erectile dysfunction can cause male infertility because it interrupts or prevents intercourse. Sperm must be delivered to your partner’s egg during intercourse in order for a child to be conceived. However, erectile dysfunction does not mean you are infertile.

  • Can I experience male factor infertility even if my sperm count is healthy?

Yes, even if you have a normal sperm count, you can experience infertility. Infertility factors in Males can be caused by low sperm mobility, malformed sperm, as well as blockages in the sperm ducts that prevent the sperm from entering the semen. All of these other factors can cause infertility, even if your sperm count is healthy.
