WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 12, 2019) – Mark P. Trolice, M.D., director of The IVF CenterSM, joined PCOS advocates from across the country to meet with lawmakers on Capitol Hill to address the considerable gaps in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) care and research. The event, PCOS Advocacy Day, brought together PCOS patients, supporters, researchers, healthcare providers, celebrities and industry professionals who are urging their Members of Congress to make PCOS a public health priority.
PCOS is the most common hormonal disorder in women, affecting 6-10% of all reproductive-aged women. It is one of the most critical, under-diagnosed and underfunded areas of health. PCOS can lead to lifelong complications including depression, infertility, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, cancer, and other life-threatening diseases.
“I am honored to be part of a voice for the millions of women negatively impacted by PCOS throughout the United States,” said Dr. Trolice. “PCOS takes an enormous personal and economic toll on patients and the healthcare system as a whole. There is an urgent need for increased PCOS research and treatment options to improve and save lives. PCOS should be part of a greater conversation to prevent conditions such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and maternal and fetal death. We urgently need to close the gaps in knowledge and care.”
Countries such as Australia, China, and India, among others, have already recognized the severe and pervasive nature of PCOS and have committed to investing in treatment research, resources, and programs. Similar efforts are needed in the U.S to prevent the devastating effects and psychosocial impact of the disorder.
