Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) was at one time referred to as Artificial Insemination, and fertility doctors have used this procedure for years to improve fertility rates and help families conceive. It is a simple laboratory procedure that concentrates the highest quality sperm in a small amount of solution to then be injected into a female egg. IUI is used in fertility clinics around the world for many causes of infertility.
Reasons to Use IUI Generally Include:
– Unexplained Infertility
– Abnormal Sperm Analysis w/ Low Count (Motility)
– Inability to Perform Coitus Traditionally
– Couples who Chose to Use Donor Sperm
Pregnancy rates improve modestly by combining IUI with Clomiphene Citrate. Chances of pregnancy improve even more when combined with injectable stimulating medications (Gonadotropins).
Important to note, IUI is not part of the Assisted Reproductive Technology procedures such as In-vitro Fertilization (IVF). It is considered its own procedure, so be sure to talk to your doctor about possible success rates with all options.
